“Mary, Did You Know?” is a well-known Christmas song filled with awe and hope of why we celebrate Christmas! Skills learned in this piece include lots of syncopated rhythms, rolled chords, a few lever changes, and quick placing of 4-finger shapes. This is a great piece to learn if you are looking for a bit of a challenge. We will break down those syncopated rhythms in the video course, and you’ll know them so well you could play them in your sleep!

    Fun and challenging!

I enjoyed this course immensely and went through it in 3 days. I still need a lot of practice, as the arrangement is quite complex, but as it is such fun to play that is no hardship. The extensive syncopation is tricky, but it’s also a lot of fun and creates the mood of the piece. This is marvelous practice if you have taken the Reading Sheet Music course — complex rhythm, lots of symbols, etc. I agree with the comment below that Carrie’s teaching style is different from Christy-Lyn’s, but it’s equally good — just different. When she first starts a section, Carrie runs through the notes very fast indeed. Don’t worry, that first bit is really more of a demonstration and seems to be designed for students who will learn primarily from the sheet music. The remaining lessons in the section break everything down carefully with lots of practice tips and close-ups of the fingers, in the style of teaching we expect from LTH. If you like the song, and you haven’t tried this course yet, you are in for a treat.

    Different teaching style (YMMV)

I thought the initial video going over each section went way too fast for me to learn the notes. Then the practice tips video made no sense to me because I had no idea how to put the hands together. I thought it would make more sense if I bought the sheet music, but it didn’t clarify it for me. It was so hard, this is the only course I haven’t completed that I’ve purchased from this site. I liked the rhythm exercises and thought they were helpful, but because of the teaching style, I couldn’t get my head around the notes. This style obviously works for other people, but I think I’ll have to stick to Christy-Lynn’s courses, I’m just not very good at putting hands together without guidance.

Hi Kaitlin, thanks so much for your honest feedback on the Mary Did You Know course! 😊 I am very sorry to hear that it did not help you in the ways that you were expecting, and we have given you a refund. Because I want this course to help people learn in the best way possible, I would really appreciate your input on how I could improve it. I am taking note of the videos you mentioned to go back and tweak, and would love to hear if there are any other videos within the course that I could add or re-film to make them clearer? This feedback will also help me in filming future courses, so I can adjust my teaching style to be the most helpful for people to learn. Thank you again for your honest review. It’s really helpful to have people give feedback in such a respectful and honest way, so that we can keep improving! 😀 I look forward to hearing from you, Carrie

    Perfect arrangement!

I have loved this arrangement and have played it almost constantly since starting to learn it. I found the movement exercises that Carrie taught to internalize the rhythm extremely helpful.
