What can be covered in your Expert Consultation?
Christy-Lyn and Carrie have laid out the most common areas of concern below. Before your session you’ll be able to choose which of the areas you’d like to focus on, so that Carrie or Christy-Lyn can make sure that you get forward momentum on the areas that matter the most.
Feedback on technique and hand position
It’s always helpful to make sure you’re on the right track when it comes to your hand position and technique! Christy-Lyn or Carrie will diagnose if there’s anything about your technique that may be holding you back. Whatever level you’re at, they’ll suggest what you can improve and exercises that can help you practice and solidify good technique.
Feedback on your seated position at the harp
If you experience discomfort as you play or want to ensure you’re on the right track with your posture, Christy-Lyn and Carrie are here to help! It’s one of the most important elements of playing the harp as it informs your technique and hand position, so ensuring you’ve got it right is critical. Carrie or Christy-Lyn will watch you play, evaluate how you’re sitting behind the harp, and show you what adjustments can be made to help you avoid injury and improve your playing overall.
Practice advice for faster progress
When progress seems slow, or you need help approaching a particular piece, a consultation is a great way to go. Christy-Lyn or Carrie will talk through your current practice, give ideas on what may be holding you back, and help you establish a routine that works best for you. They can also help you develop a practice plan and share tips on practicing more intentionally to see real improvement in your playing!
Feedback on executing a particular skill
This option is for you if you’re struggling to carry out a specific harp skill correctly. It could be something that comes up in your pieces a lot, like rolled chords, or it could be something you want to learn to extend your skills, like brush muffles and cross-unders. You’ll be provided with exercises that will target that skill and help you see real improvement.
Preparing to perform
Do you have a performance coming up? Carrie or Christy-Lyn can help you build a set list, give encouragement and effective tips on working through performance anxiety, and provide feedback on your songs to ensure they’re performance-ready.
Assessing whether you’re playing at the right skill level
It’s important to ensure your playing is always supported by your technique, not so difficult that your technique suffers or so easy that you don’t ever challenge yourself. Christy-Lyn or Carrie will listen to you play, help you determine if the music you’re working on is a good fit for your current skill level, and give suggestions of pieces that will help you grow most quickly.
Something else
You might have a completely unique challenge that you’d like help with. Select ‘Other’ in the booking process, and describe what you’re facing and what you’d like to achieve.
About our Harp Experts
Hi, I’m Christy-Lyn!
When I first started learning to play the harp at 25 years old I assumed I wouldn’t get very far because I thought I was ‘too old’ to have much success. I had always heard that if you didn’t start as a child, you shouldn’t even bother trying.
But once I started learning to play the harp I progressed so much quicker and further than I ever expected: I was performing within 3 months!
As a trained Occupational Therapist, I’ve been able to extract what helped me to learn so quickly and apply it to hundreds of students, tweaking the method to suit different personalities and learning styles.
Now 10 years later I have learnt so many skills to help students progress with their learning and I am here to help you reach your full potential.
Hi there, I’m Carrie!
I’ve loved the harp since I was young, having been introduced to it when I was only eight years old! The music teacher at my elementary school was a harpist, so she created a program for the kids so they could learn how to play. I almost didn’t sign up because I was insecure about being unable to read sheet music, but I’m so thankful I didn’t let that stop me.
I was hooked the moment I plucked my first string, and I haven’t stopped since! I went on to complete a Masters in Harp Performance at the University of North Texas School of Music, and after graduating, I taught harp to middle and high school students before my path led me to Learning the Harp.
I’m so excited that I get to teach others how to play an instrument I love. That shared passion is like no other, and I can’t wait to see you thrive on this journey as you play your harp.

The comprehensive plan will leave you feeling equipped and inspired to keep going, and it’s a resource you can always refer back to!
What’s the price?
If you were to get weekly harp lessons, it would cost around $260 every month. That works for some students, but it’s not for everyone.
Expert Consultations are designed to work alongside the learning you do in courses. That means that you will only need a consultation once in two months, or even less frequently.
At $225 (or 6 credits) for Christy-Lyn’s consultations and $150 (or 4 credits) for Carrie’s consultations, you can create a realistic learning plan which includes a variety of input to keep your learning fresh and exciting.
Here’s one example of how you might plan your expert input, alternating your purchases of consultations along with courses:
- Month 1: Learn through a course
- Month 2: Get an Expert Consultation (to receive feedback on what you’ve learnt and how your technique and playing is improving, plan what to learn next, discuss any challenges you’ve faced, or anything else you like)
- Month 3: Learn through a course
- Month 4: Get an Expert Consultation
- etc…
Using the suggested plan above would mean spending less than weekly lessons with the average harp teacher, for a guided system of learning that’s built to give you results.
This is an investment in your harp journey that will set you up for success – a checkpoint in your learning with expert advice you can refer to again and again.
