“After the Rain” is written to sound like water dripping off the trees from a much-needed rain here in Cape Town, South Africa. It’s very simple but sounds really peaceful and lovely. It’s a great piece to work on basic technique while playing something that sounds good.

I really have enjoyed your on-line teaching

    Rose-Marie Couture (verified owner)

I really have enjoyed your on-line teaching and I think this song is beautiful. It is wonderful to start playing an actual lovely song instead of songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, etc when I am just starting my second month of playing. I still play those to in order to keep practicing along with the beginning books, but I am especially loving your instruction. I plan to keep practicing and perfecting this song, and then I will continue on with your courses! I love them!

When I tried to learn to play the harp over ten years ago there was nothing like this, and I gave up. I never gave up my will to learn and after over ten years away from the harp I was determined to start again, and bought a Harpsicle Grand Harp and your on line courses are helping me fulfill my dream 🙂

    Great Piece

    Kathryn Kelly

Great piece — this piece introduces 2nd and 3rds — it is a soothing and pretty piece that helps you develop muscle memory for the shapes of 2nd and 3rds without being boring or monotonous like a practice drill. It is a piece that everyone can enjoy playing and listening!

    All the parts are useful

    Violet Webb (verified owner)

Everything offered with the course is useful – I found it helpful to listen to the music and read the sheet music first, then try and pick out as many of the notes as I can before I even started the videos. That meant that I could follow along at full speed, and I could focus on technique and the bits I found harder with Christy-Lyn’s encouragement. I was playing it full speed with very few mistakes after a week of practice and I got to exercise my music reading too!

Very encouraging piece for a beginner

    Amber Edwards (verified owner)

I loved this lesson, I took the free YouTube series course and learned good basics then began After the Rain. I thought that it was a great starting song and really helped me with my technique. I also have been super encouraged by learning such a pleasant song right away. It was so easy to understand and follow I learned it (not fluently yet) in a week! My one piece of feedback would be maybe a troubleshooting section towards the end. I had a little trouble with some things along the way. But overall I loved it 10/10!

    A really positive learning experience

    Amanda Westrum (verified owner)

“Hi! I just wanted to say that this was a really positive learning experience. I was able to go from zero experience with any harp to being able to play After the Rain at full speed in two days (many hours of practice though..)! I’ll probably keep playing it for a few days to make sure I don’t sacrifice technique for speed, but I had so much fun with this.

There’s something about the way you teach that really makes it feel like I have my own music teacher. I used to play piano with a teacher, and when learning technique especially I feel like it is so important to have someone who reminds you to hold your hands right or complete your motions. I can get completely lost in learning the melody, so it is nice to get those gentle reminders. I’m so glad you do this!

In general, the video tutorials I’ve completed so far (The course for complete beginners + After the Rain) give the impression that everything is very well designed. There are clear thoughts about the “”path”” that each person might be on from the moment they start playing the harp, and no unfamiliar concepts are mentioned in passing without first having been explained to us. It makes the whole learning experience feel very cohesive.

I truly look forward to my next video course from you – you’ve created an amazing and positive community here :)”

    Excellent course

    Amanda Westrum (verified owner)

I tried this right after completing the course for absolute beginners (“How to Play the Harp: Start here”). When I heard this piece I thought “Well, I’ve just managed to identify the strings on my harp, and now I’m somehow supposed to be able to play a full melody?”

If you’re thinking the same thing and you’re not sure if you’re ready, I’m here to tell you that you are. Christy-Lyn breaks everything down in really simple terms. Because of how she explains things, you won’t end up just mimicking what she does – you will really understand what she does and why.

Your courses were recommended to me by a local harpist who no longer gives lessons due to covid.

I love the way you teach! It helped me to focus on my technique, fingering, and timing. Breaking down the pieces into simpler, easier bits definitely helped in these areas for me. And all the while, making me look forward to practicing, not dreading it. I had found your videos on YouTube, before I even got my harp, and fell in love with them. Christy-Lyn, you are an amazing, helpful, teacher! Thank you! -Megan Peck, 15 years old

This piece is great for really getting good basic technique – so much nicer than beginner pieces that most beginner instruments do like Twinkle Twinkle, Mary had a little lamb, etc etc. Well set out course & easy to follow. I am going to use this piece as a good warm up to keep honing on improving my technique.

I loved learning “After the Rain” as my very first piece of harp music. To be a beginner and be able to learn a piece that sounds really beautiful on the harp so soon after learning and practicing the basics, I thought was pretty amazing. It encouraged me to keep on learning! The way it was taught by Cristy-Lynn gave me the time I needed to stay on each section till I learned it well. Her teaching methods and cheery personality made it lots of fun and very comfortable. I think she’s got to be the best teacher ever for someone as old as I am, and picking up
an instrument now. This harp music ministers to my own soul!

    It works for me.

    Rebecca Sims

The tutorial works for me. Because I have no musical experience I had to stop, repeat and work through a few things to really grasp the pattern in each section. The key for me is to practice in “small chunks of time.” I did this three to six times a day. Now that I have memorized the whole piece I need to practice until I can do it fluently.

    Bev Wilson

This piece was just the right amount of easy AND difficult, so that I felt like I had really accomplished something when I was finally able to play along with Christy-Lyn at full speed! And how wonderful it is that this feels like a REAL piece of music. Thank you for writing it. I love how you teach each section and then put it all together. I love that you include a slow playback and a playback at full speed. The one thing that might make it better for me would be to count off one or two measures before you start playing the playbacks. I found it hard to start my computer and then get my fingers placed quickly enough to be able to start with you. Other than that… Fantastic! Thank you for this course!

    Kimarie Webber

I thought this course was an excellent way to teach bracketing and all the myriad things that one should remember when first starting out, i.e., proper posture, arm, wrist and finger placement. I like going at my own pace so that I can focus on these things individually until I can put them all together. I particularly liked playing something that was a beautiful song and not just an exercise, yet it was an exercise to get my acclimatized to using both hands. Very sneaky, effective and fun! :-). I got a really slow start, but it affirmed for me that at almost 70 years old, I can learn something new and actually do this! Christy is a marvelous instructor and her smile and passion invite you in. I now need to polish and speed up “After the Rain”, but have already downloaded my next course/music: “Mahogany Moon”. The science and beauty of music and both of these pieces alchemical natures speak to me! Well done!!!!

This was a perfect way to get started. It helped demystify the harp and allowed me to learn 5 other songs on my own just from Christy-Lyn’s sheet music before I got my next credit for a new course. It was very easy once I understood what I needed to be doing and she is very clever in her arrangements. This teaches the most basic skills that you need, but in a song format instead of rote exercises. I am so happy my next credit is here so I can learn some more skills!

I have had experience with the piano and flute, but never with the harp. This was the first real lesson I’ve had since getting my harp. It was super easy to learn, sounding lovely, while mastering the basics. It doesn’t get technical, so you actually can know what you’re doing. It mad me focus on my timing and counting. Both of which I hate doing. But I now I don’t mind doing it as much as I usually do. I would definitely recommend to beginners, who have and haven’t any musical background. Loved It!!
