I learned this song as part of the Harp Beginnings 1 Program. I loved that we started with a Scottish folk song and that it was accessible and foundational to begin understanding timing and the symbols. While practicing this piece, I discovered that perhaps the Pano tuner app is more accurate (or at least easier for me to understand) than the Korg TM-7OT tuner my son gave me. My high G (string 19 on the Harpsicle Harp) kept sounding off. Once I switched to the Pano tuner, I was able to get it sounding correct again.

I do think a lot of people would probably be able to start with a song slightly harder than this one. This course laid out the basics really well, I wasn’t overwhelmed at any point. Although these courses can feel repetitious at points, it forced me to slow down and practice the same section multiple times so I felt very comfortable with it – instead of rushing to the next section because I’m excited and want to get through the whole thing in an hour lol Great teaching.

I know this song as I can play it on my acoustic guitar so the learning of the melody was fine with me, I did struggle at first as I don’t read music but once I had the placement of my fingers on the strings well ingrained in my head I really started to love playing the piece. It’s far from perfect as this point and my timing isn’t always correct but I do feel a sense of achievement thanks to Carrie’s easy to understand teaching methods. thank you Carrie for making my introduction to this magical intrument so enjoyable.

Excellent in depth tutorial which Carrie walks us through in sections. I had found timing and getting used to my new harp a struggle and am a slower learner. However everyone is so encouraging and Carrie explains so well that I can’t help to just want to keep going back to help really get this one in a good place for me. I look forward to trying mahogany moon and appreciate how well this course is structured for a very new learner.

I’m taking the whole harp beginnings class, of which this is the first part. I had originally signed up for the next one in the sequence but decided I’d better swallow my pride and go very basic. In my favor: my right hand, which is used to plucking strings (like, I can Travis pick), but only 6, and from a different direction. I’m having to learn really from the ground up where the harp strings are in space so I can get my fingers into the right configuration before I pluck the notes—another big difference from guitar (also flute and voice). I just love these guys; their energy is just so unrelentingly positive, it’s like having Yo-Yo Ma complete with clone teaching the class. The sequence is logical but I feel they’re also trying to teach you to go beyond technique and on into art. I started a little late and am definitely still in catch-up mode, but I plan to go on to whatever the next class in the sequence is and, I hope, keep going. Not sure you want to do it? I’m a ripe old 71 and have arthritis everywhere. If anything, I think this is helping by keeping my joints supple. And there’s a reason why angels are pictured with harps or lyres instead of violins (or, worse, accordions). It’s nearly impossible to make a harp sound bad. If you hit a wrong note, it just sounds like jazz!

I could see myself getting more comfortable with the hand position as the sections built on each other. Going so slowly was a bit frustrating, but very much worth it. I remember hearing a South African saying: “Make haste slowly!”

My New Year’s resolution was to learn to play the harp. I had not even touched a harp before, and the course The Water is Wide is a perfect introduction to foundational techniques while also teaching a beautiful simple song. The instructions were very clear, the teacher is encouraging and everything is broken down into suitably short videos. In the last videos you get to play the whole song with slow counting, and then at normal speed. At the end of the course there are recommendations of what to learn next. I highly recommend this to brand new harp players.

This course was really valuable for getting some solid basics established before I move on to other tunes. Placing, bracketing, hand position and movement are all presented in such small, incremental sections that my brain, hands and fingers could learn with ease and made me stop rushing to get to the next part. This was my first LTH course & I very much look forward to “living with it” this week! I went through the 14 YouTube sessions of How To Play The Harp with Christy-Lyn in early January & had to wait for 2 months before starting Harp Beginnings. Terrified that everything I was practicing would need undoing, I can now say that going through those free lessons first made ALL the difference for me! I already read music, but am completely new to harp (horizontal keyboard to verticals harp strings was/is difficult post-stroke) & SOOOOO appreciated being given clear direction & permission to move @ my own pace! My fears of unlearning bad habits are allayed, but there are definitely things for me to improve on. My right hand is the more affected by the stroke, but I rather forgot to pay my left hand any mind. 🤭
