Back and neck pain, blisters on fingertips, inflammation, and tension in wrists and fingers are common issues experienced while playing the harp.
Thankfully there are ways to alleviate and even prevent pain while playing the harp, and we’ll explore how to do so in the workshop!
If you struggle with niggles and discomfort, or you experience pain while playing the harp, you’re definitely not alone.
The harp is a physically demanding instrument to play, and there are various reasons why you may experience pain while playing at some point in your harp journey.Â
In this workshop, Carrie will share what she’s learned from her experience working through various playing-related injuries (such as back pain and tendonitis) with the help of physical therapists and other harpists. She’ll give you practical tips to help you play with ease and teach you how to play pain-free!
Topics covered in this workshop include:Â
- What to do if you have pre-existing conditions that make it painful to play
- Preventing back and shoulder pain by finding the right posture and alignment at the harp
- The importance of stretching and taking breaks (including a stretching routine you can implement in your own practice time!)Â
- How to protect and treat your fingers from blistersÂ
- What to do if you feel pain as you play
- Managing over-playing injuries
Note: The workshop will not address pre-existing non-harp-related conditions, but the tips given in the workshop may assist with managing these conditions as you play.
The replay is available a day after the event, so you can watch and learn at your own pace – as many times and whenever you wish.
Disclaimer: Carrie is not a medical professional and will not diagnose or provide medical advice. The workshop content is based on her experience as a harpist and her work with qualified physicians who’ve helped her manage and alleviate playing-related injuries.

This was very helpful and enjoyable as well! Carrie was encouraging and helpful and gave a lot of tips. I really liked seeing her demonstrate how to sit properly and how to hold your arms. I have a tendency to not raise my arms up enough. I am starting to catch myself with my arms hanging down. My left one particularly. I had surgery on that arm and my arm has never felt the same since. Anyway, it was worth getting the workshop and I think it is very beneficial. 🙂
