“Only Time” is one of Enya’s most popular songs, and people will be thrilled to hear it played so beautifully on the harp! It’s thought-provoking and rich in harmonies and quite relaxing to play. In addition to building on your technical skills, you’ll explore various sounds we can create on the harp by learning a special effect called “p.d.l.t.” that creates a guitar-like sound. Other skills learned in this piece are 4-2-1 patterns in the left hand, some scales in the right hand, and a range of dynamics. There are no lever changes!

Difficulty level & Skills required

Late-Beginner: (for the Mid-Beginner version click here. For the Mid-Intermediate version, click here). The right hand has some scales and overlapping brackets with repeated notes. The left hand has overlapping brackets with many 4-2-1 patterns. Both hands play p.d.l.t at times. Compared to the intermediate version, the left hand is greatly simplified, allowing you to focus on relaxing and getting a good tone out of the strings. And it’s only at this level that you get to learn the p.d.l.t effect!

I enjoyed learning this piece and due to the repetition it didn’t take too long to learn. Probably was a bit easier than my usual level but I wasn’t sure if the Mid-Intermediate would be too difficult. Was good to learn about p.d.l.t. as I hadn’t come across that before. Carrie is very thorough and I like the extra videos included on different techniques (eg rolled chords), etc as it’s good to keep checking on technique. Thanks Carrie.

I have just finished this lovely piece in record time (a week and a half)! I’m not taking all the credit as there is a lot of repetition. Fingers get a good workout with left hand 4-2-1 shape, and it was my first time playing p.d.l.t. which I’m finding fun for both my brain and fingers. It needs some smoothing out for sure, but I’ve enjoyed learning and playing the piece and might even take a stab at the mid-intermediate version in the near future. Thanks, Carrie, for the excellent video mentoring!
