This arrangement is a wonderful opportunity to practice playing expressively, with the slow-moving melody and sustained left-hand notes. Such a classic piece to add to your repertoire! This version is the most complex out of the 3 levels, with many lever changes, dynamic variations, and large jumps in the left hand that can be tricky to coordinate with the right hand. If you learn this piece with the video course, Carrie will empower you to feel confident in nailing those lever changes and will show you how to achieve accuracy in those jumps through step-by-step guidance and exercises. You’ll also get some great tips on how to create musicality and balance through the piece as a whole!

Difficulty Level and Skills Required

Late-Intermediate: (Click here for the Late-Beginner version, for the Mid-Intermediate version click here). The right hand has a slow-moving melody with some rolled chords and overlapping brackets, while the left hand has many big jumps from the low range of the harp to the middle range which can be tricky to land accurately. There are also many lever changes throughout.

As a rank beginner harpist (but I can read music), I probably had no business taking on this course, but with Carrie’s step-by-step instruction, I am able to play this version of Gymnopedie. Totally do-able lever changes, gorgeous chords that you can get your hands around with Christy Lyn’s chunking practice; very satisfying to play. As a beginner, I wish there’d been more hints on where to put your focus first when you need to nail a big chord with both hands – but late-intermediate players I assume already would know how to approach big chords.
