Für Elise Course

Written by Beethoven, Für Elise is one of the most famous classical pieces of all time. Christy-Lyn’s harp arrangement keeps the familiar tune and feel of the piano piece, but it is adapted to fit really well on the harp, with harp-friendly left hand patterns, and only the most necessary lever changes. If you’ve been looking for an elegant classical piece to play, this is the one!

Difficulty level & Skills required
Early-intermediate: The main challenge is the quick lever changes but they have been well planned out and clearly marked. The right hand melody is fairly straight forward with some new 4-finger placement shapes. The left hand accompaniment includes 4-2-1 shapes, and both hands play repeated broken octaves on the second page.
Type of Harp
Lever harps or pedal harp. The small harp version works for 26 string harps or larger, and the big harp version works for 33 string harps or larger.
Range
Small harp version – Lowest note is E below middle C. Highest note is F two and a half octaves above middle C. Big harp version – Lowest note is E, almost 2 octaves below middle C. Highest note is E, 2 and a half octaves above middle C.
Levers/Pedals
It is in the key of A minor (same as C major). There are multiple G and D sharp lever (or pedal) changes in this piece.

Loved the video lesson and the piece. It took me back to when my daughter was learning the piano, she loved this piece. However in taking this lesson I was interrupted by a trip I had to take for business that was a week long and then back home to do Thanksgiving at my home. So I was out a few weeks. Hence, disrupted my flow in learning. I had to back track and relearn the lessons. A lot is said for practise and consistencey. But love the work.

This is my 8th month playing harp and my 5th piece I’ve learned. It wasn’t too challenging because I’d finished Christy-Lyn’s Canon in D course before which was very challenging for me and quite gratifying to learn. This was much easier and the lever changes weren’t too difficult. Christy-Lyn is such a wonderful teacher and her pacing and explanations are perfect for me as a beginner on harp.
I played clarinet in high school so I have a good grasp on reading sheet music for treble clef but I’m still working on bass clef. I have a lot of practicing still to do on getting this piece smooth, but I highly recommend this course for anyone who enjoys a classical music piece that will be familiar to many people and not too challenging to learn.

I have reviewed each section solo first with the sheet music, practiced with a metronome, then gone back and done the section video lessons. My approach was to focus equal if not more attention on sight reading with finger placement, and to fill in learning gaps while mentally marking the must-not-forget tips mentally WITH the sheet music. Much easier to do with other instruments I have played and trying to improve on doing this with the harp.
I did have to put this one on the side as I was getting ready for my first recital, so it was good to come back to it. I do think the sheet music is harder to read with beaming as it is arranged especially crossing measures. My tutor shared Classics at your fingertips Book 3 which had another arrangement of the same song (biggest difference was the beaming, the finish, and no G lever changes). I found that much easier to use to learn the song and read the sheet music.
I am only a bit over 6 months into my harp journey so appreciated the challenge this piece provided, but would love future videos to incorporate more screen snippets of the sheet music to encourage folks to get better sight reading while playing the harp.
Think I’m jumping to It’s A Wonderful Life next, looking forward to the next series
