  • Tied the wrong knot, now I’m worried…

    Hi everyone! 🙂

So I had to replace one of my strings (4th Octave on a Prelude) and I have yet to manage to tie the harp knot properly. In the end I got frustrated and just tied a regular knot. I went ahead and tuned it and the knot holds – but now I am scared that the knot I tied might damage my harp because it‘s not thick enough and might somehow break the wood when I starting play the string… Do you think this is likely and should I take the string out again and do it all over but properly? Or is the worst that can happen that the string breaks?

I‘m grateful for any feedback, thank you so much for your help!

Hi Laura! Not sure if the way you tie the knot would damage the harp, though here are some things you can try to make harp knot tiding a bit easier:

    1) Watch this Harp Tuesday episode where Josh Layne ties the harp knot around a cotton gauze. The gauze can go to the bottom of the sound board and it won’t cause any unwanted resonance, and it makes the knot tiding business a bit easier. https://youtu.be/K9_AdW7CxAA You can roll up a piece of cotton gauze or dressing to make it into a tube.

    2) Dusty Strings started selling these string buttons and they are all the rage! https://manufacturing.dustystrings.com/harps/accessories-hardware/tools-maintenance/string-buttons

Thank you so much for the help and suggestions!

I am going to research and try to find out if I can find the String Buttons here in Germany, I am sure they’d make life so much easier and stop me from procrastinating to change the strings and losing time when I could and should be practicing.

    Thanks again! ☺
