  • Nylon or fluorocarbon ?

Posted by Unknown Member on 12 May, 2022 at 4:17 am

Hello all, I am considering the purchase of a Thormahlen Ceili. It comes with the choice of nylon, gut or fluorocarbon strings. I’ve already tried concert gut (Ogden) and nylon (DS FH-34) but I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with fluorocarbon. I know that the tension is supposed to be lighter than nylon but I am wondering how they feel when being plucked. The light tension really appeals to me because I play mostly Celtic music. Any opinions ? Advice ?

    Hi Noelle!

Have you called and talked with Sharon Thormahlen? She can be very helpful when you don’t know which strings to choose. I believe she plays a lot of Celtic music, too and has experience with all the string types.

It is thrilling to hear you are considering a Thormahlen! I have wanted to purchase one of their Ceilis since they offered that model. I waited too long and now they are so busy it takes approximately a year before your harp is done. But it is worth the wait!!

      Hello Cheryl,

Thank you for the response. I have talked to Sharon but she says the Ceili and Clare were made to accommodate all three types of strings so the choice is left to the buyer. My lesson teacher tells me that fluorocarbon strings feel a little grippy which appeals to me after having played on nylon and gut. Have you tried playing on the Ceili ? Unfortunately, I am located rather far from Oregon so it’s not really possible for me to get out there to try them. I am relying solely on their reputation, videos online, and my teacher’s approval. I know it’s a gamble but so far it’s worked out with my other harps.

    Hello Noelle~

I hope to make a trip through Corvallis, Oregon soon and stop in to see Sharon. I have not tried the fluorocarbon strings yet so that would be something I will check out. I will let you know my thoughts when I do. And hopefully you can get input from others that are familiar with fluorocarbons.

    Happy Harp dreams~

    Cheryl

      Hi Cheryl,

Thanks, that would be wonderful ! I met Sharon today on Zoom and she played on three different models. I chose the Ceili, but it won’t be ready until next November. They have quite a long waiting list.

Congratulations! That would be my choice, too. Are you getting the Ceili with fluorocarbon strings?
