• New string advice

    Hi everyone!

I recently changed my very first string and it doesn’t sound right. I was wondering if anyone could please give me some advice.

I bought a standard monofilament nylon string which looks just like the others around it but it sounds so dull when I pluck it. The other strings have so much more ring to them and sound bright, not dull.

There is no buzzing noise to make me think that the string is sitting incorrectly, although I’m very willing to check this if it could be the culprit. Do nylon string have to be “played in” for them to sound as they should, or have I done something wrong?

    Thanks everyone!

    Erin

Erin, are you sure you have the right string? Do you have a string chart of your harp?

I recommend watching the video by Sylvia Woods, I learned changing strings with this one and it’s really helpful :

    Hi Christina!

Unfortunately my harp didn’t come with a string chart. It looks the same as the other strings, it just doesn’t sound very nice. I’ll have a look at the video you posted. Thanks very much!

    Regards,

    Erin

What harp do you have? There are different kind of strings. I for example have a harp with nylon strings and one with bio carbon. I think it’s important to use the same material as the other strings. Maybe you can find information about the strings for your harp and a string chart in the internet. It’s also important to have the right note and octav.
