I am a huge fan of TV and movie music. Who has pretty (preferably simple) movie music that is all in a key with no accidentals? I love to play Evenstar, May it Be, and Lothlorien from Lord of the Rings. I also enjoy the Theme from Dances with Wolves and the theme from Last of the Mohicans. I have varitions of these. I want to make a version of the Rose to play on harp and have now gotten the melody line so that is next on my agenda. I also want a small harp version of For the Love of a Princess from Braveheart & Misty Mountains Cold from Lotr. I have a version I play with block chords of Chariots of Fire that is pretty too. What songs have you learned or want to learn?

Hi Kristen: Me too. Been learning “A Time for Us” from Sylvia Woods’ Groovy Songs, and also “Cavatina” from The Deer Hunter. Megan Morris does a lovely version of that one, but it’s beyond me. Got one arrangement off the internet but it’s too advanced for me.

I am not familiar with those 2 songs myself. I will have to check them out. Do you have a video of playing them at all? I would love to hear them.

I’d love to be able to play The Ludlows from Legends of the Fall. There is a nice a piano arrangement on MuseScore, but even after simplifying it for harp, it’s still too difficult. Maybe next year.

Oh my! I had missed this song! I must have it and learn it. I found several of the musescore versions – that LH gets complex. But it is a gorgeous song!

Exactly! The left hand patterns are gorgeous but challenging. When I simplify the arrangement to a level I can attempt to play, then it loses what makes it so special — and I lose all interest in learning an easy version.

What level are you currently comfortable playing at? I am now tempted to take one of those musescore arrangements and simplify it and see if I like it. I really need those darn C&F levers installed on my double strung! I am leverless right now.

I can attempt early-intermediate arrangements. However, when I want to memorize and polish a piece, I do much better if it’s late beginner. Less frustration that way.

            .

My version has several lever flips. Even the easy piano on Sheet Music Plus is showing an accidental on the first page.

I am still doing late beginner and have not tried any of the early intermediate yet. So, I think we are probably about the same place. I know I need to learn lever flips at some point…but I do dread it. And installing them on my fireside and ballad harps when I get to building the ballad. I did get levers for C & F strings on my Fireside but have not installed them yet. I wonder if I could just skip over the lever flipping part and leave it out, lol. Would it still sound good?

This is a super simple version from sheet music plus. While it is not as full it is still nice. I still like it. I also know I can play a little more complex than this arrangement so I am VERY tempted to take a stab at arranging it somewhere in between these levels of complexity. It is currently available in Arrange me – which I think means we can request this song from Christy-Lyn to arrange for us too. Sheet music plus goes through them if you want to publish to sell on SMP which is good for us!

My friend recommended me the theme from The Cider House Rules and it is really gorgeous on the harp. I was working on it and I swore I must have got squirrelled away somehow because I learned it but did not remember practicing the entire piece enough to play it fluently. I need to get back to it now that you asked about movie music!!

Oh my- that is quite amazing too. Found a version on musescore but it is probably still to hard in the left hand for me and does need a couple lever flips I don’t have – but it might be possible to write around those too….get back to that squirrel song my friend!

Hi Kristen, I also love to play Evenstar, it sounds so atmospheric on the harp. I learnt Christy Lyn’s version of May It Be a while ago (not the arrangement currently on Learning the Harp, I think this was an older arrangement released before) but I now want to try and learn Tracie Lin’s version. I haven’t heard Lothlorien. Lord of the Rings songs always sound so good on the harp though! At the moment I’m learning Jamie and Claire’s theme from Outlander. I would love to play the Godfather theme Speak Softly, Love but I can’t find any harp sheet music for it which is a shame. I would definitely love to learn more tv/film music on the harp though.

I have Marion Le Solliac’s version of Evenstar and the one from Harp-school. They are similar and I use Marion LeSolliac’s because I got it first. I did have to rearrange a couple chords for it to fit my small harp. I may re-write the Harp-school one for my double strung harp. I found a lead sheet for Lothlorien (short version) on muscore and play that with block or broken fifths. I also have Christy-Lyn’s original version of May it Be which is a mid-beginner version. I played that til she came out with the late beginner course and now I play the late beginner version. I will listen to the other song you listed and see how I’m liking those too.

I just had the chance to listen to the Outlander song (I think, because there seem to be several songs for them?) and really loved it. The Godfather one was nice but not new-age enough for my tastes (cause that is where I am solidly at- new-age sounding stuff is my thing). Do you have a link to the Outlander song? Just so I know I am listening to the right one?

Hi, I’m glad you liked the Outlander song! The sheet music is from Harp School. It is called Sassenach but it’s the same piece. Here is the link https://www.harp-school.com/product/outlander/

Thanks for posting that link, @titia.stultitia . It explained some good strategies for avoiding lever flips, including some totally-new-to-me concepts. It’s also helpful to have a PDF download for reference.
