  • Make a short break after each learning step

This weekend I read a very interesting article in a newspaper. In short: after each learning step you should pause for at least 10 seconds. In this way, what you have learned will be memorised better and faster. I tried it and: it really works!

That is an interesting study, Markus. This link is a related NIH news release: Study shows how taking short breaks may help our brains learn new skills.

    .

For a couple of weeks, I’ve tried adding short breaks to my practice sessions. I can’t say that I’m learning new pieces faster. However, I have definitely noticed how relaxing those short breaks are.

    .

I usually learn new pieces by chunking. Practicing the same 2 measures over and over, or playing a 4-measure phrase repeatedly, becomes exhausting. My brain is easily overloaded because I’m typically attempting pieces just above my current level. Taking a short break, pushing the harp forward to stand on its four legs, sitting back in my chair, closing my eyes, and consciously releasing any tension in my shoulders, arms, hands — that is really relaxing. After a short break, I find it so much easier to concentrate again.

    .

The breaks have become an integral part of my practice sessions. They are so refreshing. Thanks for sharing the idea.
