To try to get practice at performing in public, I have been attending my local folk and acoustic rounds, usually in pubs but sometimes village halls. I’ve found (well where I live in the UK at least) that when you go to one, you get invited to lots more that very often aren’t advertised. They’re very informal with about 5-15 musicians (and storytellers) doing a piece or two each so I might get to play 3 or 4 tunes in an evening. They have been very encouraging and accommodating of my nerves (and repeated songs as my repertoire was limited) which has given me the confidence to play in public more and in front of people I know.

Thanks for this idea! I am going to try this with my harp at a local circle jam session of about ten people on fiddles, guitars, concertina, mandolin etc. Just maybe add chords when I can. I need to get over the fear of playing around other people with the harp.

Great! The world needs more harps, let us know how you get on! If you can get someone to tell you what key it’s in first I find it helps.
