  • Fluorocarbon strings and the Harp Button

I had my first broken harp string on my 34-string harp and decided to try Dusty Strings’ Harp Button. The directions say it’s for use with plastic or gut strings, but nothing about fluorocarbon. I asked the harp maker and Dusty Strings. They both felt it would probably be okay, but they didn’t know of anyone who had tried it. I’d rather not experiment on my beautiful harp! Has anyone tried Harp Buttons with fluorocarbon strings?

I’ve used the dusty strings buttons on both for carbon and gut strings, as well as nylon strings, almost ever since they came out. No problems at all.

That’s great news, Angela! Thanks so much for letting me know. I’ll go ahead and use the buttons.

I have a Lyon& Healy Drake with BioCarbon strings and I use the string buttons. Makes it so much easier to change a string!

Thanks, Christina. The nice lady at Dusty Strings asked me to let her know if the buttons work out. I can tell her that it has worked for you and for Angela, too. And now I have enough courage to go and use it on my harp. Thank you for your help.

Good topic ! I was kind of wondering about the buttons w/ fluorocarbon strings too.

I have a brand new Salvi Una and used the buttons on the Silkgut Copper strings. 5 broken strings later, the harp technician at Vermont Violins told me never to use the buttons for these strings.

      Dear Diana

my Copper Silkgut Strings broke also although I didn’t use the buttons. It is a problem of the copper flakes inside the matrix of these kind of strings. They produce little cracks and make the string brittle. I replaced them with over “normal” strings and never had this problem again.
