    Hi all,

I have bought a new Dusty Strings Ravenna 34. After hearing it and compared it with other Harps I fell in love with the sound. As I am a starter I just went by hearing and not playing.

Now that I got my harp and I am playing it I wonder if it is normal that the bass strings (steel core wound) vibrate with the higher strings so loud and long even when I am not playing them. To me it sounds like al the tones get mixed together and I keep on hearing them. Is this normal, or is it because the harp is new? Or is this not okay.

For me it is so annoying that even put some fabric against the bass strings to keep them still.

I hope somebody can help me on this.

    Thank you,

    Sandra

I think this is normal and typical for the harp, sometimes it is called “harping”: When one string is plucked, other strings are excited and induce a characteristic ‘halo of sound’. This phenomenon, called sympathetic vibrations is due to a coupling between strings via the instrument’s soundboard.

Thank you for you quick respond Markus. The harp I used before did not have this “harping” or at least not so strong. So I will have to get used to it probably. It is good to know the harp is oké 😉

I love my Ravenna 34. I like the beautiful sounds it makes. I maybe too new to understand the nuances. It is wonderful

Thank you Laura for your reply

Yes I heard so many good things about this harp. So I think it is something that I have to get used to. Maybe because my head is much closer to the string playing the harp, as listening to it, it sounds more mixed up in my head.

I only just saw your post and the responses. I have the exact same issue with my Dusty Strings Crescendo 34. Some days it seems stronger than others, and like you, I thought there was something wrong with the harp. Apparently this is normal?

But I suggest to email them if they have any suggestions to lessen the problem, they are usually very good getting back to you with answers its a family business and they know there harps
