I’ve had my harp for a good few years as an older harp learner but I find I’m not making progress .maybe because I don’t make best use of practice sessions.

I find I still go over the same pieces often still struggling with same phrases. Any tips on making best use of short practice sessions to keep progressing.

    Thx. Linda

Hi Linda! I usually do short practice sessions because it difficult for me to find a big chunk of free time. I generally would start with a play through of the piece I choose to work on during the practice session, up to the point that I’ve learned. Then I do focus practice on spots that need work. I do take lessons with a teacher regularly, and he gives me a lot of practice strategies and tips depending on what is it that I am working on. Over time I learned to apply some of those practice strategies when I learn new music without getting a prompt from my teacher, which is very helpful when I want to work on something on my own. Many harp teachers offer one-off lessons to troubleshoot so that could be an option. Some people really benefit from being in a quiet place when practicing so they can have better focus. There are some pieces that I struggle with no matter how much time I put in; often times I will put these pieces aside and go back to them later. Hope that helps!

Thank you Victoria – it is very helpful to hear what works for other people. I shall give your spot focus practice a go. I’m currently working on the Canon in D from this site so shall see how I go. Thanks again 🙂

Play the phrase really nice and slowly until you feel really secure about going from one note to another, and then gradually speed it up. And do many repeats of that spot often; repetition can really do wonders! Good luck!
