    Hello,

I have a Merlin harp from R Harps which I’ve had since I was a kid. I took harp lessons for a number of years, but stopped around high school. Now, 15 years later, I’ve picked it back up and am really enjoying getting back into it! However, I’ll admit that the harp was not very carefully stored or maintained during my hiatus — no care or regulations, etc. I’ve now noticed that the pillar is bending towards the strings, and I was wondering– is this a big problem for harps, or is this just something that happens with age? If it is a problem, is there anything that can be done to fix it (or at least stop it from getting worse)? I haven’t noticed anything wrong with the sound quality. I just play casually/for fun, but want to take care of my instrument!

    Thanks,

    Fiona

I do know it can happen to harps. I’m not sure how to fix it but I would try contacting R harps or a local harp luthier to see what they might recommend.

Thanks for the advice! For those who are interested or have the same problem, I got the following advice from the store where my harp was purchased: He said all harps bend a little from string tension over time, and it usually isn’t much of a problem. You just need to move the bridge pins when it gets regulated to compensate (I’m definitely noticing that I need a regulation!) He did not recommend changing the strings at this time.
