The song was written by Simon & Garfunkel in 1964, but it’s become a meme in recent years, so it’s still very relevant today! Christy-Lyn’s intermediate arrangement is reminiscent of the finger-picking guitar in the original version of the song, with broken chords and some harmonies in the left hand and a right hand melody that’s been adapted to sound best on the harp. If you learn this piece from the Video Course, you’ll get essential practice tips on how to make the piece flow and sound musical, much faster than learning on your own!

Difficulty level & Skills required

Early-intermediate (for beginner version click here). This piece has a simple melody in the right hand, with a left hand accompaniment that is a step up in complexity and variation from late-beginner pieces. There are parts of the piece where the two hands play the same notes straight after each other, which can be a challenge for placing without buzzing. There is quite a lot of syncopation – a rhythmic challenge! The left hand jumps around a fair bit, and the right hand has to place some tricky 4 finger chords.

Love this piece, it,s been a favorite of mine for years, maybe thats why I was able to zip through the course so quickly. Now I shall spend moretime perfecting it. I have learned so much since starting these courses, thank you everyone for making these videos avaliable, as harp instructors are not easy to come by in NH! Now if I can just overcome my stage fright.

Effective teaching of a beautiful arrangement

This is a lovely, simple arrangement of this haunting song, taught clearly by Christy-Lyn in the video lessons. Enjoyable to learn and to play. The early-intermediate version feels easier than expected; I would have enjoyed luxuriating in more of Simon & Garfunkel’s harmonies. Without written repeats to extend this lyric-driven song into 5 verses (allowing listeners to sing or think the lyrics through the whole story, as is the tendency for this unique song-without-a-chorus), I’ll just work out some minor tweaks so the song can be played all the way through without repetitive-sounding repetition. All in all, this course is an easy start to being able to play this song fully — and is already complete and satisfying for many, just as it is. 🌟

this song was enough of a challenge to keep me interested in learning it to the end, and the variety of each phrase. Although it is easy to learn, learning he louds and softs add an extra dimension to mastery.

Did the entire course yesterday and almost memorized. Yes, needs daily playing, I found it easier than beauty and the beast, which I love!
