“Behind the Flames” is a mid-beginner piece that was inspired by Flamenco music! This piece teaches foundational skills such as overlapping brackets and hands together, but it is also sounds great and you will be proud to play it for others. The Flamenco mode makes this piece sound interesting and fun – a departure from a lot of beginner music at this level. Did you know that in Flamenco music tradition, older musicians are most highly respected because their life experience will help them understand the meaning behind the music. Isn’t that beautiful?

Ot teaches important new skills for beginners while still having the feel of a “piece of music”. I love it!

I could gush all over you, Christy-Lyn, but suffice it to say (for now) how much I appreciate you mentioning how to place/play the 2 hands so close together w/out tangling them up together! (ie: sections F & G). You are a wonderful teacher!!

I like this piece because it has energy. I imagine a woman in a dress stomping her feet and clapping like a Spanish dance of sorts. The teaching method works for me!

Easy to learn. Tricky bracketing at first but then great to get it right. Thanks, Christy Lyn.

I am very grateful for the lesson on this piece. I liked the piece from the video and purchased the music first, like so many others. I learned it from the sheet music on my own, but then took the course from Christy Lynn. Boy, am I glad I did. So many issues. First of all, I realized I got distracted by the sheet music. However, with Christy Lynn’s instruction, the techniques kicked in. I had to rethink everything! I have now decided to just learn the piece through video primarily, and then use the sheet music to keep myself in practise. Thank you so much for the lesson Christy Lynn!!

As a teacher of a very different discipline (physics), I can state unequivocally that Christy-Lyn is an absolutely SUPERB teacher. This is even more remarkable because she is not immediately aware of who she is teaching — what age, what background, etc. She has a remarkable ability to break things down into manageable chunks and encourage proper practice & technique, and then to stitch the chunks together to form a cohesive whole, while being cheerful and positive, but not in an artificial or superficial way.
Put it this way, I chose this piece as a total harp beginner (I’ve been playing for less than a month) because it sounded quite challenging, and very impressive (flamenco and modes — what’s not to like?). I can now play the piece along with the slow practice video!
Incidentally, as this is my first course on learningtheharp.com, I am in admiration of whoever is doing the IT and web design. The site is smooth, clear, engaging and easily navigated. Bravo.

Love this piece. Learned it from the sheet music but like Nina, still bought the course for all the tips and Christy- Lyn’s encouragement. Love that it has such a Spanish feel to it. In fact after learning Behind the flames i went back to one of my earliest pieces i learned at the harp music school. A piece by Marcel Grandjany called El Numero Uno. One could feel the fight by a toreador and the bull escalating and the ending was just so, soo sad, filled my soul with tears and sorrow….i just could not play it. Then I learned Behind the Flames and suddenly realised i could imagine the toreador being beaten by the bull. Now I am able to play that piece, but I must admit I like Christy-lyn’s behind the flames much better 🥰

I love the key it’s in. I THINK it’s A harmonic minor. It’s just lovely. I went ahead and bought the sheet music for it since I have nearly a month before I get another credit. But even though I’ve started learning it on my own with the sheet music, I’m still going to use my credit to buy the course. Christy-Lyn teaches SO WELL and there are all these little tips and tricks I would miss if I just did the sheet music alone.

Love this flamenco feel in this tune. Really wishing I had levers though! I still need to practice a lot to get it fluid and I am only at 75% of full speed right now with my tricky bit being that D-E section. Love it though.
