What Child Is This: This lovely Christmas tune works so well on the harp, and can be played in front of the Christmas tree or at church events. It is set to the old tune of Greensleeves.
Greensleeves is a traditional English melody that people associate with the Renaissance. It creates a haunting atmosphere…some pieces just sound really old, and this is one of them! This arrangement is the simplest possible version with a left hand part, so you can play it even if you’ve recently started playing the harp.

I absolutely love LTHs teaching style – Christy-Lynn and Carrie’s step by step video lessons with emphasis on fun and encouragement in learning whilst buttoning down good techniques early on really are a game changer. I joined the Feb 2025 Harp Beginnings cohort but had to put it to one side until now due to ‘life’. I’m starting the course on watch back and have just finished Greensleeves, which was a really satisfying piece to learn. Building on techniques from the 2 previous pieces really helps to build confidence. If I can figure out how to upload a video, I will 😁

I am so happy I can now play this beautiful song for others. I cant wait to share it! I appreciate how the lessons were broken up, each section is cut at a perfect place to play in a loop. This helped me actually practice loops and progress through the song confidently.

I came back to an easier piece because I wanted to have Christy Lyn take me through all the proper placements and positions. I feel it has really helped improve my technique and I love your way of teaching Christy Lyn. Please do some more courses!!

I purchased this course to learn whilst on the Performance Breakthrough Programme. It worked stepping back a couple of levels meant I could practice eventually perform on video without feeling it wasn’t doable. I did record this and played it through many times!

I really enjoy playing this piece. Although I can read music well and play through quite early, I disciplined myself to patiently follow the videos and practise slowly with the slow play-throughs. This has benefited me a lot and reinforced what I learnt in terms of techniques, fingering, placing the fingers at the same time, chunking, etc. I am able to memorise the piece after following the lessons which come in small sections. The arrangement is easy on the left hand with long notes and step-wise descending scale patterns and just a couple of leaps. Christy-Lyn is clear in her instructions, speaks at a comfortable pace, and is always so encouraging and cheerful. Makes my practice sessions relaxing and happy! Thank you, Christy-Lyn.

This is definitely one of my favorite beginner songs to learn. Great instructions and easy to follow. I will enjoy playing this one year round too.

This is the first actual song I’ve learned to play as a (more or less) complete beginner. The song sounds wonderful and although it is classed a Mid-Beginner piece, I found it was the right mix of being easy to learn but also challenging enough to keep the learning process interesting. I was still struggling to play with two fingers on my left hand and so this song was a great choice, because it’s just simple, slow bass notes played with one finger. Christy-Lyn explains everything slowly and with tons of helpful tips, so it was both easy to follow along with the video and a pleasure to learn this beautiful song, which no doubt will be played many times over this Christmas season!

This was a genuinely nice piece of music to learn how to play. Thank you for the clarity and the small steps. They make this easy to follow, and the videos are very patient (again and again and again…)

A pretty piece of music for someone just beginning to learn to play the harp. The lessons break the song down into small pieces which makes it much easier to learn and memorize. Have fun!

I had to work this over many times at slower speed but than found it was easier and more comfortable to play it at the faster speed. I really like this song.

I’m in the final week of the Harp Beginnings 6wk course, and wanted to give this song a try. It was actually so simple to learn! Even easier than the last song we learned in the course, Behind the Flames. It was so encouraging to see my progress just from Carrie & Christy-Lyn’s online instruction and Carrie’s feedback during the beginners course. I can’t wait to try some more difficult songs. I also love that they have the option of viewing songs by difficulty.

Christy Lyn has an excellent teaching ability and is very aware of her students having varying capabilities with the harp. I really love the videos as you can do these in your own time and not feel anxious or pressured by the teacher. I have found that I can now easily identify the notes on the sheet music. The last six weeks have definitely helped me to achieve this. Thank you once again Christy-Lyn.

After a break for personal reason I got back to the harp, and to learning this melody. This time I worked with both the sheet music and with the video and… It was lovely.
It was, I won’t say exactly easy, but understandable, and doable, and a bit easier than before (which I’m very happy about), and I loved both the approach and the ability to have both sheet music and videos that explain the process.
So thank you, and know that I’m very, very happy to be able to play this music now. 🙂

I love this piece and thought it would be easy to learn it but it’s not. My memory is not good enough for all the chunks, but I admit having rushed through it. I started on my own with occasional lessons on zoom in Scotland and for some reason I never learnt to join hands, I’d learn one or the other. It is the beginning of a long journey, which I hope will result in being a bit more fluent. I have physical issues that prevent me from sitting or standing for long, so that’s a problem as one cannot play the harp in bed! I may try thou, having now ordered a mini harp which I can tune in C and just take with me when I go away.

This was the first class I took on this website. It totally changed the way how I used my fingers and my harp sounds beautiful now. Especially the slight movement of the hand when using 4 fingers and the confident positioning on the strings when playing the same string twice was making a huge difference. Also the ellbow movement when playing the higher notes was very helpful. These tips are so valuable as they can be transfered to all other pieces that I will play next. I did not need the sheets as with the learning bit by bit for me it was easy to remember the whole song at the end of the class. Great way of teaching!

This was a fun piece to play. I’ve been playing for a 7 months with beginner lessons and this is the first piece I chose during my trial period with LtH. I’m excited to keep learning. I’ll be playing this song with friends as a good friend of mine sings.

I love the fact that I learned how to use the 4th finger on my right hand (everything so far has been just the first three), so I felt I was adding to my skill set. However, with the repeats, it was easy learning. Played expressively, this one sounds like what I think of when I think of a harp. Love it!!

Christy-Lynn has a pleasant and encouraging way to keep me trying. Greensleeves: This really challenged me, but my hands and brain are finally working together. Cannot sing at the same time but that will come. Look forward to learning more pieces. My husband and daughter are enjoying hearing it.

Hi I enjoyed this piece and practiced a lot. Thank you for keeping it simple! I am still concerned that when I really try to focus on my finger positions I forget the notes. Practice practice practice!
Also every time I go to the Classmates group I keep getting redirected to the home page. maybe they have all moved on.

I have been learning for almost 3 months now, and I think this song was perfect for a beginner. The left hand just plucks one at a time slowly and often in order going down. This adds to the song but allows you to focus on the right hand melody. I just finished the course today, so I will make a video playing it when a get a bit better on it. Thank you Christy-Lyn for your excellent instructions.
