Is this you?

You wish you could play as well for others as you’re able to alone. It’s humiliating to make terrible mistakes or have your mind go blank, when you could play the same thing perfectly yesterday!

You’d love to share harp music with others this Christmas, but you’ve had bad experiences and are terrified to put yourself out there again.

You never feel good enough or prepared enough. You want to play at a level that would be enjoyable for people to listen to, but you never seem to be ready.

All the logistics of performing feel overwhelming, like moving your harp and deciding what and where to play.

We struggled with performing too!

Carrie’s Story

Performance anxiety has been one of my biggest struggles, and I’ve been on a journey of working through it since I was young.

In my college years I had to memorize and perform the hardest music I’d ever played for my degree recitals, and I felt so weighed down by the need to prove myself and measure up to the musicians around me. I wanted my playing to reflect all the practicing and hard work I did to get to that point!

But the pressure felt very crippling and not fun. Most of the time I would consider a performance successful if I were able to just get through it. If I could make it to the end of the piece without stopping or losing my place 😅

I thought there was something wrong that I was so nervous, because I thought that ‘good musicians’ always felt completely at ease with performing. But the more I tried to stop the symptoms of nerves (shaking hands, sweaty palms, racing heart) the harder it was to play! I learned that most people experience nerves (even professionals), and there are effective strategies that can help me manage them, allowing me to still have a successful performance.

I understand how debilitating performance anxiety can feel. I’ve had my fair share of performances that were flat out humiliating and painful, despite my hours of preparation. But I’ve also experienced the joy that comes from sharing my music with others.

I’ve gotten to the point where playing for others is less about playing perfectly, and more about bringing people joy and peace. Being able to share that gift has been so fulfilling! I want you to have the same breakthrough I experienced in sharing my music. It changed everything for me, and I’m eager to show you how you can prepare to play your best for others, too.

Christy-Lyn’s Story

From when I was very small I always had a big drive to sing or play music in front of other people. It made me feel so special and excited!

When I was 5 my friend got too nervous to sing “Silent Night” in the nativity play, so I very happily sang both my song AND her song… I was so pleased! In case you’re curious, here’s a video of me singing Silent Night when I was 5.

But somewhere along the way, I started feeling very nervous and self-conscious when I played music in front of others. My knees would shake, I lost my breath control when singing, and my fingers would get cold and sweaty.

Performing became something that I only did for exams where I wanted to prove myself. It felt like my joy had been stolen away from me!

Eventually I had an important realization: Performing is more than being judged by others. It’s a gift that I can share with the world that’s unique to me… It’s part of what makes me who I am and it’s meant to be a joy! I started pushing myself to perform for others more often, even though it felt uncomfortable at first. And the more I performed in all different contexts, the easier it became!

The key was that I needed to change my mindset, and learn ways of thinking that helped me change how I feel when I perform. I still have moments where I feel really nervous, but I love performing because I know what a difference it makes to other people, and I get to be a part of such a special moment.

I have a strong belief that each person has something really important to share, and I’m excited to help you experience the joy of performing. It truly is possible to enjoy it!

Will you be the next success story?

Introducing the 'Performance Breakthrough' Program

As harp teachers, we’ve had the privilege of guiding many individual students to success in their performance journeys. And now we’re here to help YOU.

We have dived into the latest research about performing, and include information from experts who have guided Olympic athletes and elite performers to success, and who have found anxiety-calming methods that work even for severe panic attacks.

Combining their insights with our deep understanding of our harp students, we’ve crafted a research-backed Method designed specifically for you…

The 'Wholehearted Performing' Method:

The secret to sharing your harp music with courage, resilience and joy

There are 4 key elements to the ‘Wholehearted Performing’ Method:

The courage to bring what you have

Performing is about more than your skills; it takes a lot of courage! Bringing what you have means taking on a new mindset towards performing that allows you to have joy in sharing your music, no matter what happens.

The discipline to prepare practically and mentally

Practicing your notes is not enough to have good performances. Performing is a completely different skill that needs to be practiced in its own right, and the right strategies make all the difference.

The ability to manage performance nerves

Performance nerves are a common challenge, but they don’t have to hold you hostage. There are proven techniques that help to regulate your nervous system and manage performance anxiety effectively.

The resilience that comes from an ‘on-the-day’ strategy

Resilience in performing means being able to handle whatever comes your way. This means learning how to get into a calm state just before you perform, how to recover if you make a mistake, and how to respond to others’ comments afterwards.

“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen. The willingness to show up changes us. It makes us a little braver each time.” – Brené Brown
