Recently made popular by the Outlander series, Skye Boat Song is one of the most well-known Scottish tunes, with a fascinating history. Christy-Lyn’s arrangement of this song brings a feeling of drama without being overly difficult, and there is a lot of space for expression and dynamics. For the intermediate harp player who loves Scotland, this is a piece that gives great payoff for minimal effort!

Difficulty level & Skills required

Early-Intermediate: The right-hand melody has some syncopation but it is fairly straight forward in terms of fingering. The left hand uses a variety of chord shapes but with long notes so there’s plenty of time for placing. There are a number of rolled chords.

This is my first course – I thought it might be a bit too hard but it turns out it’s exactly the right level for me 🙂
Christy-Lyn’s amazing way of teaching made it so fun to learn and easy to memorize rather quickly as well.
It’s full of lovely patterns and triads, it’s like playing a little puzzle that goes all the way from the bottom strings to the top octave.
    Such fun!

Like so many others, I have loved this song for years. The video sounds lovely and lush, and I was surprised to see how simple the sheet music actually was — looks more like a Late Beginner than intermediate. Or so I thought!!! Still have issues with doing the rolled chords properly, so this is GREAT practice! Point is, you can learn this lovely arrangement in a short time, and it will sound great!

Love this piece and playing it

The more practise I do the better always I get. I started to learn the harp a year ago but my teacher did not really care about fingering. He is a metal Celtic harp player and though I do love the sound of the metal strings there is a different playing manner to the Celtic metal stringed harp. I was getting frustrated because I had to hold my harp on my lap and I was never relaxed. I watched Christy Lynn on youtube and she stated that you can’t play the harp well unless you are relaxed and I knew then and there I had to get a bigger harp so I can learn stress free. (Even though I played on the floor, or sitting with the harp on a crate I was always worried about it) I had a sweet Stoney End lap harp but I moved up to a Dusty Strings Ravenna 34 harp about 6 months ago. I love her!! I started a free course with Christy Lynn and committed to the Harp. I take my lessons with Christy Lynn online upstairs on my Stoney End lap harp and go down stairs and practise on Ravenna. The Skye Boat song is so lovely on the larger harp because of the deep rich droning tones of the Scottish Highlands imagery. My husband loves the sounds of the harp in the house now and I don’t hide away. Thank you Learning the Harp group!!! Carry on!!

I am absolutely addicted to Christy0-Lyn’s teaching style! I have traveled to Scotland for over 20 years and have always loved this song! Even before Outlander!! I am thrilled to have learned it so quickly and would love an even more advanced version down the road. For now, I have found these courses so very helpful and they have brought me back to the harp after a long hiatus. I have spent a fortune on harp lessons 10 years ago, and have learned more in 3 weeks than I did in 3 years with my previous teacher. I’m so glad I looked for help on YouTube. It has encouraged me to get back to the harp! Thanks so much Christy-Lyn xo

    Skye Boat Song

I love this song, because it has a fine rhythm that I like. It make me feel so lucky, even I know acutally it is a sad song….. I do love going up and down an octave and I changed or put some note to it to get it reacher. On my small harp there is the low D missing that’s the reason. In some day I like to record some pieces I learned from CL-Video Courses….Hope I can do after such a long pause….

    A real delight

Just finished the last lesson of Skyboat and it was a delight to learn this song. I find the lilting quality of the beginning notes to be very joyful. Thanks Christy Lyn!
