Written by the South Korean composer “Yiruma” in 2001, this is one of the most well-known modern classical piano pieces. The name of the piece brings to mind beautiful images of flowing water and peaceful places. Christy-Lyn’s arrangement of this piece stays true to the feeling of the piano piece, but the chords and fingering are carefully adapted to harp so that it feels “right”.  The addition of tasteful rolled chords and a glissando makes this piece a showstopper that you can be really proud to play!

Difficulty level & Skills required

Advanced: The right hand melody has fast passages with crossing over and under, complex placement shapes, fast jumps, grace notes, rolled chords, and a gliss that ends on a specific note. The left hand has lots of 10ths, alternating with 9ths and octaves. The piece has sections that are busy with both hands at the same time, so that it is challenging to know where to look.

Lever harps or pedal harp: The small harp version works for 26 string harps or larger, and the big harp version works for 33 string harps or larger

Big harp version: Lowest note is D, almost 2 octaves below middle C. Highest note is E, two and a half octaves above middle C.

Small harp version: Lowest note is D below middle C. Highest note is E, two and a half octaves above middle C.

It is in the key of A major (with G sharps, C sharps and F sharps). There are no lever changes during the piece

I have really enjoyed learning “River Flows in You”. I never thought I could do an advanced course. But Christy-Lyn helped me along. I still need to bring it up to speed and add expression. I plan to keep practicing it a lot.

    Achievable

Really enjoyed learning this beautiful piece. I was skeptical at first about attempting an ‘advanced’ course but with Christy-Lyn’s tutoring, from the first lesson I felt this song was achievable. I’m so pleased I accepted the challenge. Whilst I’m still working on the ‘flow’ of my river, even when played slowly this song is peaceful and meditative.

    Great song

I am a good intermediate player. This song was a real reach for me. I work with a local instructor and together we got this song to a decent level where we focused on knowing the notes well as well as steady rhythm. However, it will be a while before I get it up to tempo. So Elizabeth (instructor) and I agreed to table it for a few months with the idea that when we come back to it, I’ll be that much more experienced and can increase the tempo. What a great song for me to learn!
