  • A Question about music notation – I just got a new pedal harp

On harp music, when you see 8va – it means to play everything an octave higher. On a pedal harp – when you need to play something that is below the bass clef bottom line G – how do they notate that it needs to be even lower ?

I have this range of strings – G00 (above 1st octave) to F42 (6th octave).

From what I’ve seen in my pedal harp music, most (if not all) of them are notated with lots of ledger lines in the bass clef.

I found the answer in a Music Theory book. There is a corresponding 8vb notation for bass clef – it is written under the staff and means to play the written notes an octave lower. Some publishers use 8va for bass clef also – but the difference is where it is written – when above the written notes – play an octave higher – when below the staff and the written notes play an octave lower.

@Pamela Evans Congrats on the new pedal harp! What brand/style did you decide on?

Wonderful! Are you enjoying the sound? Is it comfortable to sit at/play? I have a Camac Excalibur 38 string, lever & love the sound.

yes I like it a lot. I’ve had it since last Tuesday, just got done tuning for today and it is already holding very well, only had to really adjust only a few strings today, so I’m very p[leased with the acclimation to our household temperature and humidity. Thank-you for asking. I have a Stoney End Lorraine double strung lever harp with full levers on each side. Have had that since the mid 1990’s.
